kitchen setup ideas, cooking essentials, gadgets, cookware and Pan

from: pere

While every part of the house is important, it is the kitchen that requires utmost attention. Right from designing to getting the equipments in place, setting up a kitchen is always a challenge. After all, you don’t want to end up in a situation where you’re serving your guests a Chinese meal but don’t have forks. Or, even worse, you buy a million things but don’t use half of them.

So, in order to cut down your woes and to help you choose from among the million items available in the market, we are sharing a checklist of kitchen essentials that will see you through at all times.

 PRE-COOKING ESSENTIALS

Grinders and mixers: A must, especially in an Indian kitchen, where most of the cooking-time is spent grinding various kinds of masalas and spices. Remember that different masalas require different kinds of grinders. Therefore, ensure that your grinding equipment has both wet as well as dry grinders. If the quantity of the masala you prepare is less, a mixer with multiple attachments is ideal for you.

Juicer: This is for the health conscious who feel that a glass of juice a day keeps all sickness at bay. Although not an essential part of the kitchen, a juicer could come in handy when you have guests at home.

Chopper, slicer and peeler: Fruits and vegetables are something one cannot do without, and chopping and slicing them is always a concern. If you feel you don’t have the time to sit and chop vegetables every day, this equipment will prove extremely helpful.

COOKING ESSENTIALS

Vessels: The vessels used in the kitchen depend on the kind of recipes you are trying your hands on. A typical Indian household has certain food items that are a mainstay — pulses, rice, roti and vegetables are not just essential for our survival but also form a major part of our diet. And in order to prepare these, one requires at least a sauce pan, a deep fry pan, a tava, a shallow fry pan and a stainless steel vessel or a non-stick vessel.

A sauce pan can be used to prepare the vegetable as well as tea. A deep fry pan or kadhai comes in handy when frying something; it can also replace a sauce pan when the quantity of the vegetable is larger than usual. If you’re the low-oil cooking types, go in for a shallow pan instead. A non-stick vessel can prove extremely useful for amateur cooks as it is easy to handle. Even if you’re a rice-eater, a tava is something one cannot do without, so do not forget to buy one. And along with it a roller. If you keep your kitchen clean then you can skip the chakla and roll your rotis on the kitchen slab instead.

Gas Burner: Even if you believe in microwave cooking, a stove is a must. It need not be lavish — buy something that goes with the size of your kitchen.

Microwave and Griller: It might sound slightly high-end but in today’s fast paced world, everyone wants things done at their fingertips, which is where these gadgets fit in.

Crockery and cutlery: While crockery can be of your choice, a set of microwave dishes are important if you own a microwave. Keep your cutlery basic — tablespoons, teaspoons, knives and forks. Your set of kitchen knives should include a blunt knife for butter and jam, a knife for chopping vegetables and a knife to chop meat if you’re a non-vegetarian. A tin opener and a bottle opener are essential too. In terms of cooking, keep away from fancy-looking ladels. Instead, go for wooden ladels and non-stick spoons, which are not only good to look at but also serve their purpose.  Tea and coffee mugs and, of course, strainers play an important part in an Indian kitchen.

STORAGE

An important tip when it comes to storage: Buy food and grocery items for a month and make sure you use them in that given time span. Besides, a refrigerator is the lifeline of every kitchen. However, not everything can be stored in a refrigerator, and this is where airtight containers come in. These can be used to store dry items like masalas and grains.

Cleanliness begins at your kitchen

• Every time you use a vessel, wash it, dry it and then keep it in
• A dustbin should be part of your kitchenette
• Keep it simple and avoid fancy-looking equipments
• Detergents, linens and waste cloth are as essential as any other kitchen equipment.
