What are negative calories Food Factors affecting it, Diet for it

from: Johnson

Negative calories are the talking point among dieters these days. But there are so many misconceptions that one often ends up putting on the kilos instead of burning them. Nutritionist Experts explains why negative calories can actually be positive for your body!

 What are negative calories?

Calories are basically units of energy. Most people believe that negative calories refer to food items that have zero or negative calories. Nothing could be further from the truth. Fact is, all foods have calories — high or negligible. Negative calories simply point to the net effect of those calories on the body. Here’s a simple example. Say, you eat a dessert that has 500 calories. If the body spends 100 calories to digest them, the net effect on your system is 400 calories. Conversely if you have some salad with lettuce which is low on calories and your body spends 100 calories digesting them, there is actually a calorie deficit. That is the effect of negative calories

 Factors affecting it

Constitution of food

Negative calories depend on the constituents of food. Check out this chart to understand how the body functions.

• 1 gm of carbohydrates  =  4 calories
• 1 gm of protein  =  4 calories
• 1 gm of fat  =  9 calories

Say you have a dish that has 10 gm carbohydrates, 5 gm protein and 5 gm fat. The meal had 105 calories. The body would not require too much energy to absorb this combination. Now say your protein content was 10 gm while the carbohydrates were 5 gm, the system would have to burn more calories as protein and fibre are difficult to digest. Which is why, those on a weight loss programme or those who work out heavily need to take care of their protein intake.

Metabolic rate

The metabolic rate is decided by the calories expended while doing any activity. A person who has high metabolic rate spends more calories to do the same activity as compared to a person who has low metabolism. Hence such an individual will have higher negative calorie effect with the same amount of food in comparison to a person with a slower metabolism.
