Also called renal-friendly foods, a kidney-friendly diet is one in which protein, phosphorus, and sodium levels are controlled. While the body needs protein for muscle growth and tissue repair, people with kidney ailments cannot rid their bodies of the waste created when the body uses protein.
Therefore, in order to limit waste build up, a kidney diet may control the amount of protein consumed. In addition, phosphorus may need to be controlled to avoid losing calcium and weakening the bones, and sodium may need to be controlled to avoid high blood pressure. A kidney diet may also be higher in fats and carbohydrates than a normal diet to make up for the loss of calories from protein.
Dieticians prescribe for a normal person to avoid kidney stones that, not to take too much milk and milk products, bakery products as it contents high percentage of sodium and potassium.
Avoid ready to eat products, cold drinks, canned foods, junk food because these are full of preservatives as well as sodium and potassium whereas less in vitamins and minerals. Protein is good for kidney but it should be consumed according to the ideal body weight. The prescribed diet is 0.821gm /kg body weight /day."
A list of major must-haves and must-avoids to ensure healthy kidneys:

Carbohydrates
* Carbohydrates should make up the bulk of a kidney patient's diet. While many people follow low-carb diet to lose weight, carbohydrates provide energy the body needs to function properly. People with kidney disease or kidney damage need to keep up their energy levels with simple and complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates include whole-grain breads, brown rice and some vegetables. Good, simple carbohydrates are found in fruits. Avoid products that contain refined sugar, such as cakes, pies, cookies, candies and pastries.
Protein
* Too much protein increases the strain on the kidneys because protein breakdown results in a buildup of urea in the bloodstream. Eating foods that are lower in protein can help to decrease levels of urea and improve how kidney patients feel. Replace high-protein foods like meat, eggs and milk products with lower-protein options like grains and vegetables.
Phosphorus
* Phosphorus is a mineral that is necessary for healthy teeth, bones, muscles and nerves. However, a decline in kidney function makes it difficult for the body to balance the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. When phosphorus levels are high, calcium levels decrease, causing the body to leech calcium from the bones. This can lead to brittle bones and bone and joint pain. Avoid high-phosphorus foods such as cheese, sardines, cola soft drinks and peanut butter. Replace them with lower-phosphorus foods such as broccoli, non-cola soft drinks, natural juices.
Salt/sodium
* Monitoring sodium intake is very important for people with kidney dysfunction. When the kidneys do not work function well, sodium is not excreted properly in the urine. This leads to fluid retention and swelling. Avoid foods that are high in sodium, including potato chips, luncheon meats, cheese, canned food and table salt. Spices and herbs that do not contain sodium can be used to add flavour to food without increasing sodium intake.
Salt can increase blood pressure, so you may be encouraged to reduce salt intake. (Salt also has the effect of increasing thirst, so it makes it more difficult for patients to restrict their fluid intake).
Potassium
* Potassium is a mineral which is found in the cells of body tissue, and any excess would normally be removed by the kidneys. Kidneys that function normally keep the level of potassium in the body at a normal level. When the kidneys do not work properly, potassium levels can increase and cause irregular heartbeat and other serious medical conditions. Avoid bananas, broccoli, chocolate, tomatoes, prunes and mushrooms, as they contain high levels of potassium. Vegetables with low potassium are bottle gourd, cucumber, beetroot, white pumpkin, lettuce, and carrots and fruits include grapes, oranges, pear, papaya, pineapples, apples, watermelons.
Vitamins
* Some patients may need vitamin B and C supplements.
Iron
* Iron levels may drop and cause anaemia and this can be replaced with iron tablets.
TIP: Remember — individual patients have individual dietary requirements. What you need will depend on the stage of your kidney failure, your blood tests, and the kind of kidney ailemnt you may be having.
