• Ensure that the protein and fibre percentage in your diet is higher than any other nutrient. This ensures the net effect is negative.
• The timing is important. Your body has a high metabolic rate in the morning and post workout. It is low at night. So if you are the sort who has cravings at night, it’s best to indulge in foods that give a negative calorie effect, e.g.: have sliced cucumber or carrot topped with chat masala.
• The method of cooking plays a role. Choose baking, roasting or sautéing over deep frying.
• Nutrients in the other ingredients can nullify the effect of negative calories. Spinach, by itself, is very low in calories. If you boil or puree it, you retain the low calorie impact, but make palak paneer and you negate all the virtues of the spinach.
• These foods have negative calorie effects:

A. Vegetables: Lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, celery, asparagus, colocasia, spinach, garlic, brinjal, turnip, radish, fennel, French beans, chillies and spices.
B. Fruits: Citrus fruits, musk melon, grape fruit, passion fruit, apple, papaya, pineapple, orange, blueberry and cranberry.
C. Non vegetarian foods: Chicken without skin, fish or lean red meat, egg whites.
Myth
Ignorance often leads people to eat the wrong things while on a diet. Take the popular watermelon diet. Sure the fruit is good for the system as it is 92 per cent water. However the 8 per cent solids have very high sugar content. If you over-eat oranges or watermelon during this time, you gain more than you lose. Also don’t go overboard on the juices of such fruits as the fibre is completely lost.

Here’s a great salad that has a negative calorie impact.Take mashed garlic, carrots, French beans, capsicum, chilli and spinach. Grease a non-stick pan with an oil spray. Sauté garlic and add the vegetables. Sauté on high flame till slightly soft. Top with pepper, lime and oregano
