Chinese Dietary Recommendations for Good Health
from: Nicolas PautetChinese dietary therapy, a branch of (5,000-year-old) Chinese medicine, considers food in terms of its yin (associated with the feminine, expansive, acidic, cold and humid) and yang (masculinity, contraction, alkalinity, heat, dryness) energy. Yin and yang, are two opposing yet complementary forces that pervade
everything in the universe, which can be balanced according to an individual’s particular constitution and health conditions to restore vital energy in a sustainable
way.
In the west, we look at energy in terms of heat and electrical activity, with bodily organs largely being considered independently of each other. In the east, however, energy is seen as circulating through the body along meridians with organs being interdependent.
Interconnected
By observing organs such as the heart and lungs contracting and dilating in turn, we see the alternation between yin and yang. Each organ is also associated with a flavor, with an element (fire, earth, metal, water, wood) and with a time of day. The liver, kidneys and lungs are considered to be the keys to good immunity and the body always aims to restore balance. A fundamental way it does this is in maintaining the PH of the body, which can remain surprisingly stable. Our modern diets, however, often thwart the body’s remarkable self defenses rendering it far too acidic.
Dietary recommendations Here is some advice based on these theories:
• Foods that neutralize acidity in the body are carrots, cooked onions, rice, cooked green cabbage, adzuki beans and millet.
• Babies are predominantly yang and it is, therefore, important to limit excess acidity in their bodies.
• Fever can at times be beneficial since it removes acidosis and should not necessarily always be repressed.
• Eat fruit long before or after meals
• Consumption of fruit and raw vegetables should be according to seasonal availability.
• Avoid drinking excess fluid; it is pointless carrying on drinking when you are no longer thirsty.
• Industrialized food, chemical additives and fast acting sugars cause demineralization of the body and are detrimental to health.
• Seaweeds are good for the thyroid and intake should be emphasized. For essential minerals, a teaspoon per meal is enough.
• Cook food for a long time on a low heat in winter and steam food in the summer.
A therapeutic dish could be composed of one spoonful of seaweed soup, two to three teaspoons of legume soup (lentils, adzuki, black soya beans, chick peas) four soup spoons of cooked vegetables and eight to 12 soup spoons of cereals (rice, millet, buckwheat), preferably organic and local.
The seven key features of good health are, the absence of tiredness, sound sleep, good appetite, good memory, good mood, mental alertness and a sense of justice. Notably these are not only confi ned to the physical. This approach urges us to be introspective, to observe where the seat of pain really is, associating this with what we have eaten and reminding us to be patient with our bodies. After all a state of imbalance has not happened in one day and will not go away in one day either. Since each person is unique, this method offers a way to adapt our food to our individual selves and to rediscover good health.
