Benefits of breakfast & Best options for teenagers, adults, senior citizens
from: Viswa Benefits of breakfast
• It provides us with the nutrients. Skipping breakfast makes it a lot harder to get the recommended daily dose of most nutrients.
• It can aid weight loss. When our body starts the day without food, it burns calories slowly to conserve energy in anticipation of starvation. Besides, it is often seen that people skipping breakfast substitute calories with mindless nibbling.
• It boosts our brainpower — Our brain and nervous system cannot function only on glucose as a fuel. And if we don't provide this fuel to kick start our system we will be running low on energy, feel fatigued and mentally fuzzy.
Best breakfast options
For a school kid: Like adults, kids have different tastes, and they are well aware of their tastes. Keep variety in their breakfast in terms of texture, colour and tastes. Use fancy names to attract their attention.
A simple egg and bread combination can be made interesting in the following manner:
Eggs in The Nest: Take two slices of whole wheat bread. Using a small cup cut out a hole out of the bread (in the center). Melt butter in a pan, put in the bread, break open an egg into the hole. Fry till it's done. Serve it with a glass of chilled milkshake.
For a teenager: Moog dal chillas that are stuffed with vegetables and served with curds. Teenagers who are still in the growing phase require proteins. They are also required for tissue regeneration which happens in teenagers.
For a working adult: Power packed Oats — Cook about 2 tbsp of white oats and let it cool. In a blender, add a cup of curds, fruit of your choice, three to four black currants (or dates) and the cooked oats. Blend and chill. This can be stashed in the refrigerator the previous night and it can be eaten the next morning. It is a quick fix breakfast which contains all the nutrients and is ideal for adults.
For a senior citizen: Our body functions change as we age. Eating problems like reduced taste, loosened teeth, dry mouth, dysphagia caused by the decline of physiological functions are common among the elderly. Major alterations would involve cooking methods like food for the elderly needs to be cut into smaller pieces by chopping or grinding, modify food texture by pureeing with blenders before eating and so on. Meals also need to be more nutrient dense as poor appetite is also seen. Dalia Upma served with curds is a good option for the elderly.
