Some simple and Easy tips for Cooking Beginners

from: Tinn

Trying your hand for the

first time in the kitchen? You need to keep certain things in mind before you
try your hand at cooking though. While recipe books and wellwishers will
inundate you with information, you also need to trust your own gut a bit.
Remember experience and time is the best teacher, so don't lose hope to fast.
Familiarise yourself, first and foremost, with cookery terms. Ask for help or
assistance when needed and never stop yourself from experimenting.

Seasoned home cooks
rarely use measuring tools for their ingredients. As a beginner, however, that
you always measure your ingredients. Invest in a set of measuring cups and
spoons, and a simple set of pots and pans. Try and use a little less seasoning
than your recipe suggests. When you're almost done cooking, taste the dish and
add more seasoning to get the flavour you prefer.

Plan before you start
cooking. If you're preparing two things, start with the one that will take
longer to cook. Try to lay out all your ingredients on the kitchen counter
before you begin. Measure out ingredients and finish all your peeling and
chopping. If your procedure involves baking, preheat the oven. Start with simple
dishes before you attempt the more complex ones.

Easy Tips

  • To keep cauliflower white while cooking it, add some milk to the water.
  • If you're making potato
chips, let raw potatoes stand in cold water for about half an hour before frying
    them to make them crisper.
  • In case you're planning
on making lettuce the next day, keep it in your fridge without washing. Wash it
on the day you use it.
  • Instead of using
stainless steel or aluminium bowls to mix salads, use a wooden or glass bowl.
  • Microwaving a lemon for
about 15 seconds before squeezing will give you more juice.
  • When working with
dough, make sure you apply olive oil on your hands. This will ensure that the
flour doesn't stick to your hands.
  • When you mince garlic,
sprinkle some salt so that the pieces don't stick to the knife and chopping
    board.
  • Don't use ground spices
for more than six months. It's always best to use fresh spices.
  • When you want to separate the white from the yolk, use a funnel.
Break eggs in a funnel - the whites will go through and leave the yolk sin the
    funnel.
