oolong tea, white tea, greentea(green tea) types of herbal teas

from: Gupta

Tea drinking has graduated from a mere habit to an experience to be savoured thanks to the availability of a wide variety of teas in the market. We explore the gamut of this much-loved brewed beverage From fine dining restaurants to roadside eateries, tea is indeed the undisputed queen of beverages. After water, it is believed to be the second most consumed beverage in the world and the growing variety of tea has taken tea drinking to a new level.

Welcome to the world of tea!

While speaking about the variety of teas, “With a wide variety of teas and tea concoctions, tea drinking has undergone a sea change in the last five years. Today, the choice in tea is overwhelming in India. Our a la carte offers more than 80 different types of tea such as butter apple tea, banana caramel tea, Kashmiri kahwa, mint tea, etc.”

Tea assortment

All kinds of tea come from the same plant and it is the processing, geography and growing conditions that distinguish different types of teas. "The dried and processed leaves of the plant Camellia Sinensis is tea, which is broadly classified into black, oolong, green and white tea. Herbal infusions popularly known as herbal tea is not exactly tea but the dried leaves or flowers of varied plants and herbs,"

Black Tea: The processing of black tea requires full oxidation of the leaves after being plucked from the plant. Even though black tea does not have many antioxidant properties and contains the highest amount of caffeine it is the most favoured tea worldwide. Like western countries decaffeinated black tea is fast catching up in urban India. Keemun and Darjeeling are regarded as some of the best black teas.

Oolong Tea: It is a traditional, semi-oxidised Chinese tea. It is stronger than green tea and milder than black tea. Due to its fragrance and intriguing tones Oolong tea tends to give a taste of fresh fruits or flowers.

Green Tea: Green tea is touted as a healthy tea across the globe. As it is non-oxidised, it contains more antioxidant properties compared to black tea. It is low in caffeine and high in antioxidants compared to black tea and oolong tea. The grassy taste of green tea is akin to white tea. Camomile, jasmine, etc are types of green tea.

White Tea: White tea is a clear brew with a mild golden touch. It is the least processed tea with no oxidation and has the highest concentration of antioxidants. It is appreciated for its natural sweetness, mild and delicious taste.

Herbal Teas

Besides the tea derived from the plant Camellia Sinensis there is also a wide range of flavoured tea obtained from various plants and herbs. While most other teas contain caffeine and act as stimulants, herbal teas by and large do not contain any and are drunk for its medicinal benefits.

Jasmine Tea: It is commonly consumed in China where it is called Jasmine flower tea. Green tea is often the base of this exotically scented tea.
Fruit Teas: This tea is produced from the various blends of fruit extracts and fruits like apricots, black currants, apples, wild cherries, passion fruit, oranges, lemons, etc

Orchid Tea: It is procured by blending crushed orchid flowers with semi-fermented oolong tea. This fragrant brew is mild and soothing.

Lychee Black Tea: It is made from black tea that is scented with the husks of lychee fruit.

Peppermint Tea: This herbal tea is made from the leaves of the peppermint plant and has no caffeine in it. It is refreshing and laden with many health benefits.
